It's been a bit since my last Warhammer 40,000 addition to this Gallery and whilst there's no shortage of requests regarding it, I only had time these last few days to catch up with some of them.
This illustration was done for a group of Battlefleet Gothic players, whom are preparing a very special table for this weekend's Games Day Chicago 2012. The description they sent me was quite straightforward (just how I like it):
"Its the dawn of another black crusade, Abbadon the despoiler is in the midst of planning when a Blackstone fortress is expelled from the Eye of Terror. These were instrumental in the last crusade. So Abaddon is leaving his lieutenants to muster his foces and leading a personal mission on a modified Devastation class cruiser (one of his fastest escort vessals) to intercept the fortress before any imperial forces can react.
Unfortunately for him a Space Wolves scouts on a patrol mission intercepted some of the transmissions, spotted the cruiser leaving the Eye of terror and is on an intercept course.
The space wolves are going to try "Cut off the head" of the despoiler and prevent another crusade, without his influence most warbands will fall upon each other."
There were a lot of 'firsts' for me with this illustration. It was the first time I had to finish such a large illustration (this is actually an 11"x17" board, which I seldom use) in such a short ammount of time; this one took me about three days. It was my first time drawing anything regarding space vesels in the Dark Millenium. And it was my first time rendering the Eye of Terror, quite a key element in the Warhammer 40,000 mythology. Overall, i think I came out of the fray unscathed, but as usual, you'll be the judges. Hit Download for the larger version to catch all the details better.
Let me know what you think and if any of you is attending Games Day Chicago, be sure to swing by these fellows' table; it will not dissapoint! Plus, this piece is going to be a HUGE banner beside it. No way to miss it
