Artist's Comments

Well, to wrap up this week and after hearing so much about Disney buying Marvel (a piece of news I rant about in my updated blog [link] ) I thought I'd put up a piece with a bit of a statement.

Back in the day, when I read "Weapon X" by the great Barry Windsor Smith, I was blown away by his adult, mature take on Wolverine and thought that was what made comics great. That was the essence of what I wanted to do and I was proud and happy that Marvel let its characters grow in that direction.
Unfortunately, that was not to last. I soon realised that BWS was just one man in a mountain of bad stories of endless remakes of old characters. I found out that it wasn't his vision that the market was following but rather the stories in which Wolverine's claws went 'snikt' and he said 'bub'.

Thus, as the industry makes yet another move towards a new horizon, I felt it was time that everyone asked themselves... what are we fans defending Marvel for? It's been long since a BWS created a jewel like "Weapon X". Of course, there has been a lot of good stories in the middle, but, tell me the truth: isn't the ammount of crappy stories the double of those few good ones?

So, here's my take on Wolverine as I think he should be. Not as HUgh Jackman in the films, not as the spandex dressed mutant form the superteam, but as a man driven to madness in a failed attempt to create the ultimate weapon. A man turned into a beast for no other purpose than to perpetuate humanity's most terrible ability: to kill flawlessly.

I hope yo enjoy it and let me know what you think as usual!

Nic.-

Interesting take. I agree with what you said in your comments.

As for the art, great job as usual. I love the style.

I don't usually deviate towards Marvel comics that much anymore. Sometimes when I'm at my local comic shop I'll skim through a couple of the new releases or oogle one of the Thor Omnibuses but I generally read some of the Video Game comics (The stuff that tends to be more background info that comes before or after the initial game, though they have become repetitive in that aspect). And for that matter I am more into Manga but even that doesn't catch my attention much anymore. I only buy the newest addition to a series already established (such as Hiroumu Arakawa's masterpiece "Fullmetal Alchemist").

I was surprised at your portrayal of Wolverine, as I did expect the cliche appearance of him foaming at the mouth with rage as he brought his claws up to strike someone down. After reading your blog entry about Weapon X it made sense then. This is him as a broken animal, a human with inhuman experiences who is driven to the edge. He looks as if calm, as he wonders where to now? What am I?

Great stuff there mate, Stay Frosty.

Wow man, another great one. The brooding eyes. The expression of loss, confusion and wonder. Very strong. I've never read that story, but I agree with you about not needing to defend Marvel. I don't. Many of thier characters live on in my memory, but I don't buy the comics. Not worth my money.

I agree with your comments on here and your blog. Marvel hasn't impressed me for a while; of course, neither has DC. They've all done a lot of bad ideas -- some that I just infuriating! I'm still up in the air for Disney buying them out. Now, I've worked for Disney and know firsthand how much of a bitch they can be, but I know Marvel has been having a lot of financial difficulties and a buy out is better than a crash-and-burn extinction, so I'll give the credit for that. But new ideas and new stories are key to letting these character live on. All these remakes, alternates, all around crap, there still new ideas out there and I'm a canonist. There is hope.

Now, the piece. I love it! I love my Wolverine dirty and furry! I, too, love the Weapon X arc! Love his sense of movement, line quality, and the snow! :meow:

I have that comic book, I think I got it when I was six, seven, and it scared the shit out of me. I read it again recently, and I'm still shocked by its content, the sheer inhumanity of it always make me draw a deep breath when I finally put it down.

So I agree with you, this change can bring something new with it, good or bad, but let's never forget that it's the stories, not the company, that makes a good comic.

Also, fantastic art, I feel it really captures that... glint of humanity behind the heavy veil of animal.

I love the image and the fact that you used a Pearl Jam song as the title.

This is fantastic, and i still find it highly odd that they actually bought Marvel...
