Keeping up my promise of updating matreial more often, I dug again into the NRG! vault, finding things you may not have seen. Such is the case with this illustration which, if you were not a backer in our Free Mars: Ashes 2 Ashes KICKSTARTER campaign, you did not see.
This was made as an exclusive image to go with one of our status updates over at Kickstarter, depicting one of the main antagonists of the sequel to out first book: Earth's Remnants.
For those not in the know, in our saga Earth is a wasteland, destroyed by centuries of pollution and war, which ended up making it a barren husk of a world. The few survivors left on the planet, guard it with a feverish religious zeal, proudly displaying the mutations of their flesh as marks of their faith and humility. Led by the High Theocrat, the Remnants cling to their toxic home, resisting the radiation and poison in the air. You can’t spend more than six unprotected minutes on its surface without being fatally irradiated or contracting Type-7 “Manchester” Ebola. Being the desolate place it is, Earth is also a perfect location for prisons, which where politically sensitive figures eventually land when caught. Such is the fate of the Martian revolutionary leader Damien Kessler. The Remnants value their privacy almost as much as their religion and their temperaments are at least as nasty as the planet, so when four punk rockers from Mars come along looking for their comrade, there will be blood.
I love drawing post-apocalyptic settings, so Earth and its inhabitants were a joy to render. I tried to mix a lot of different scavenged technologies to their equipment as well as making their skins tanned and burnt from the toxic sun. I also had them all wear googles to protect themselves from blindness and I chose a very specific ochre/green palette for the whole atmosphere of the planet, with metal and edifications being completely covered in brown rust.
I hope you enjoy this piece, as usual and come by the website to check out the tale: [link]
