Fear of the Dark

Good evening, dear watchers and watcherettes...

After a bit of an absence around dA, I return to my weekly updates with yet another image soon to be printed a sold within my 'Goddesses and Monsters' portfolio.

This piece is very simple in its concept, but has proven to be one of my most daring, regarding lighting. It has always been difficult for me to work with light, its focus and its reflections upon objects.
However, as this works testifies, I have been improving my skills and now this fairy's chanelled light brings up some rather nasty visages within the cavern's dark walls.

The overall feel of this illustration also took me back to my starting as an artist; I used to draw lots of fairies, given their almost inevitable iconic relation to Fantasy. But I always put a twist of my own, and this is no exception. Fairies need to protect their kingdoms too, so I figured they must have soldiers treading dangerous places to prevent threats. Thus, the (skimpy, I know) armour.
The wings are referenced from an actual warm climate butterfly.
