Artist's Comments

*WHEW*

These latest incarnations of The Emperor's Primarchs from the Warhammer 40,000 mythos are really taking me longer than usual to colour and finish; but I think that's a statement to how good I think they are and how much of my skills I'm pouring into them.
This time, it's the Dark Angels Chapter's Primarch, the loyal and honourable Lion El'Jonson turn to get the spotlight and it is this image that marks my true reinvention of these characters. I'd already illustrated this knight before and whilst I think that image has its strong points on its own, it's very outdated now in my eyes, and I think this version shows my evolution as an artist quite plainly. The older version is here: [link]

I hope you'll agree that I've come a long way since then and that you'll enjoy this image. I could go on and on about small details or the character's background, but for that, there is this: [link]

Enjoy!

But I digress

Oh beautiful! The first one is still good nonetheless, but you really have improved. Great work again!

Emperor, bestow on me Your righteous fury and Your furious strength. Let me become the storm that blasts the enemy from Your sight.

Very, very nice. The Dark Angels are among my favorite chapters, (second only to the Ultramarines and Black Templars) and this is a very stirring depiction of their Primarch. And chance we'll see you do Guilliman?

Your right, this does indeed show your evolution as an artist, and man has your art come a long way! The presence of the armor, of the great Lion in general, is greater then in the older version. The details you've done on this version, while not as pronounced on the black armor as in the original, are extremly well done, especially with the improvements you've done. While I'm not a fan of anything tall sticking up on armor, the wings on his helmet look really good and aren't over done, something GW could learn from with some of their minitures. The hooded figures and winged sword are iconic images of the Dark Angels, and anyone not familiar with the Chapters original color, the color now only worn by the Ravenwing, could easily tell what Chapter he is from with a little research. I love the lion on his helmet and the green eyes, a nice refreshing color in terms of Marine helmet lense colors, I see way to many red ones on dark armor when another color would have looked just as good. The hazard striping on the wire in far back is a nice ode to the older editions of the game (namely 2nd edition), where black and yellow chevrons and warning stripes were the norm, even in the official art, and while I'm not sure if it was intentional to be that or not, I still think it's a very nice touch. And last but certainly not least, the background! This time I'm not going to gush over your gold border (though it doesn't mean I don't love how you did it!) but the actual background of him. It's wonderful, the leaves have a nice variation that gives them character and that sky! It's an awful lot like what I imagine Caliban would look like, and is just wonderful on its own.

If this is the calibre that the other Primarchs are going to be done to, then I can't wait to see them, even Gulliman. Keep up the good work, do it well but take your time, no need to rush anything that is not only for your enjoyment, but of this calibre. I know you've made many a DA fan very happy right now. Though now it makes me wish you would do the epic clash of the Lion against Russ.

For the Lion! For the Caliban! For the Rock! Let the Fallen repent or perish, as that is our only path to salvation! In the name of the Emperor we fight on, as the first of his legions it is our holy duty to remove the taint of our dishonor from the galaxy!

He's /beautiful/. So very regal. You've made his name fit quite obviously, even though I know nothing of his mythology.

“Such heroic nonsense.”

This is really a good depiction of the lion. Though I will say that he is in no way loyal. Dude very well may have been a Heretic. It is completely in the air for this primarch alone on which side he stood. But otherwise this is a GREAT warhammer peice! Your work is as always VERY good.

Unbelievable!!!!! This piece is so wondefully complex and intricate! Well done :worship:
